Creative Commons was established in 2002 to provide an alternative to copyright that encourages sharing of intellectual property. Inspired by open-source software, shareware, and freeware, Creative Commons has created a set of copyright licenses free for public use that replace "all rights reserved" concepts with more flexible definitions that allow people to dedicate creative works (websites, scholarship, music, film, photography, literature, and courseware) to the public domain, or retain their copyright while licensing them as free for certain uses, on certain conditions.

The Free Expression Policy Project (FEPP), founded in 2000, provides research and analysis on difficult censorship issues, and seeks free speech-friendly solutions to the concerns that drive censorship campaigns. FEPP's primary areas of inquiry are Restrictions on publicly funded expression; internet filters, rating systems, and other measures that restrict access to information and ideas in the digital age; threats to free expression and access to ideas that are caused by restrictive copyright laws, governmental or corporate control of academic research, and mass media consolidation; and initiatives and arguments for "shielding" adolescents and children from controversial art, information, and ideas.

Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts

The original Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts program was founded in New York City in 1969 to provide free legal assistance to artists and arts organizations who otherwise could not afford it, to provide education about art-law related matters, and to act as a legal voice for artists and the arts. Today there is a loose network of "volunteer lawyers for the arts" programs throughout the United States and several more worldwide.
